The materials used in heat shields must withstand intense thermal loads while maintaining structural integrity.

Historically, ablative materials have been the cornerstone of heat shield technology. Ablative heat shields work by absorbing heat and gradually eroding, carrying away thermal energy in the process. Phenolic-impregnated carbon ablator (PICA) is a widely used ablative material, notable for its lightweight properties and high thermal resistance. NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory, for example, utilized PICA to protect its Curiosity rover during atmospheric entry.

In addition to ablative materials, ceramic tiles have played a significant role, especially in reusable spacecraft like the Space Shuttle. These tiles are composed of silica fibers and can endure temperatures up to 2,300°F (1,260°C). Their low thermal conductivity helps insulate the vehicle’s structure from heat. Recent advancements include the development of ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) such as zirconium diboride and hafnium carbide. These materials can withstand temperatures exceeding 4,500°F (2,482°C) and offer improved durability. Researchers are also exploring flexible heat shields made from woven carbon fabrics coated with ablative resins, which provide adaptability for various vehicle shapes.
