The Moon’s phases, a captivating spectacle observed by humanity for millennia, are the result of its orbit around Earth and the interplay of sunlight illuminating its surface. These phases, ranging from the new moon to the full moon and back, occur due to the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

As the Moon orbits Earth approximately every 29.5 days, different portions of its surface are illuminated by the Sun. The Moon itself does not emit light; instead, it reflects sunlight. When the Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun, the side facing Earth receives no direct sunlight, resulting in the new moon phase. During this time, the Moon is nearly invisible from Earth.

As the Moon moves along its orbit, more of its sunlit side becomes visible. This gradual increase in illumination is known as the waxing phase. The first visible phase after the new moon is the waxing crescent, where a sliver of light appears on the Moon’s right side. This progression continues to the first quarter phase, where half of the Moon’s surface facing Earth is illuminated.

The waxing continues until the Moon reaches the full moon phase, positioned opposite the Sun with Earth in between. At this point, the entire face of the Moon visible from Earth is illuminated, creating the bright, round appearance familiar to many.

Following the full moon, the illuminated portion begins to decrease, entering the waning phases. The waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent phases mark the gradual return to the new moon, completing the lunar cycle.
