The human brain, a complex network of approximately 86 billion neurons, relies on a sophisticated communication system known as synaptic transmission to function effectively. This process enables neurons to transmit signals, facilitating everything from basic reflexes to complex thoughts and emotions.
Synaptic transmission occurs at specialized junctions called synapses, where the axon terminal of one neuron is closely positioned to the dendrite or cell body of another. The communication begins when an electrical impulse, or action potential, travels down the axon of the presynaptic neuron. Upon reaching the axon terminal, this electrical signal triggers the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels, allowing calcium ions to enter the neuron.
The influx of calcium ions prompts synaptic vesicles—tiny sacs filled with neurotransmitters—to merge with the presynaptic membrane. These neurotransmitters are then released into the synaptic cleft, a narrow gap approximately 20-40 nanometers wide (0.0008-0.0016 inches). Once in the cleft, neurotransmitters diffuse across and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron’s membrane.
Binding of neurotransmitters to these receptors induces changes in the postsynaptic neuron’s membrane potential. Depending on the type of neurotransmitter and receptor involved, this can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron, influencing whether it will generate its own action potential. Afterward, neurotransmitters are either broken down by enzymes, taken back up into the presynaptic neuron through reuptake mechanisms, or diffuse away, ensuring the signal is brief and precise.
This intricate process of synaptic transmission is fundamental to brain function, underpinning learning, memory, and overall neural communication.
